How do I avoid common pest problems?
Other tips
Use small, clean flowerpots filled with Westland John Innes Seed Sowing Compost. Make a tiny hole in the surface and sow one seed into each pot. Cover with a thin layer of Vermiculite or more compost. Water gently with tepid water and label. Place in a light, warm place, or use a propagator to germinate at 18029 degrees celsius (60 - 75 degrees fahrenheit).
When the roots have filled the pot they are ready to plant out, pot up into larger pots or transplant into a Westland organic Instant Tomato Planter. Make a hole about the size of the root ball in the organic Instant Tomato planter, or half fill a large pot with West+ Multi-Purpose Compost. Place the root ball in the hole and firm gently. Add a strong stake and tie the step gently to it. Keep well watered but ensure good drainage.
Your plants will produce several short side stems of tomatoes (trusses), which need support as they ripen. Ripe, red tomatoes can be easily harvested by gently twisting them from the plant. As the plants mature, strip off the lower leaves to allow the sunlight to ripen the lower fruit. By September you can remove almost all of the foliage to allow the late summer sun to ripen the late fruit.
