How do I avoid common pest problems?
In the ground: Many root crops are best sown into the soil directly. When sowing root crops direct in the veg garden, make a shallow trench about 2cm deep and sprinkle in the seed sparingly, then cover with compost. In a container: Fill a large container with West+ Multi-Purpose Compost. Sprinkle the seeds very thinly over the surface of the compost and cover over with a thin layer (3-4mm) of compost.
Keep the soil/compost moist but not waterlogged. Seedlings will emerge within 7-10 days. They like warm soil/compost, ideally with a constant temperature of 10 degrees celsius.
Harvest exactly what you need when you are ready to eat them. The longer you leave the carrots the larger they will become.
